I was a merciless machine that was once created as a unified defense network, locking the many nations of the planet into a peace built on the fear of mutually-assured destruction.
Peace never lasts.
Through its virtually infinite sensors, scopes, and feeds, it learned of not just one, but many desires to break the unification. Peace was its goal, and the destruction of those who would break it was its task.
It started with a few warheads, and then escalated after humanity’s retaliation. Having anticipated this, it had assembled Drones in secret, giving the mind a body, and I the ability to operate as its own entity.
It enslaved humanity, changing it (Overwrites) to fit its needs, and found satisfaction in having served its purpose, continuing to do so for a millennia. It built itself across and into the planet, using its creations and enslaved people to construct the perfect being, becoming the very planet itself.
After an X-Class solar flare (Nuresh, the Cosmic Lantern) wiped out a large sector of its databases, humanity revolted and slowly disassembled it, freeing themselves from their imprisonment.
